We believe nature
belongs everywhere

Enclosed Earth was born from a simple obsession: what if you could hold an entire living ecosystem in your hands? We started in a small apartment, experimenting with glass jars and cuttings from local nurseries.

Today we craft hundreds of terrariums each year — but every single one is still made by hand, with the same care and attention as the very first. We're a small team with a big belief: that living with nature, even in a tiny way, changes how you feel.

Best Plants for Beginners: No Green Thumb Required

Some plants are practically indestructible. We list the ten easiest terrarium-friendly species and why they're so forgiving.

01
Top Up Water Weekly

Aquatic terrariums lose water slowly through evaporation. Top up with filtered or dechlorinated water weekly. Avoid using tap water directly — let it sit for 24 hours first to off-gas chlorine.

02
Algae Management

Some algae is normal and healthy. Excess algae means too much light. Move your aquatic terrarium slightly away from the light source, or reduce exposure to 6–8 hours per day.

03
Trimming Aquatic Plants

Trim overgrown stems with sharp scissors and remove clippings immediately. Decomposing plant matter will cloud the water and can cause harmful ammonia spikes.

04
Quarterly Water Change

Every 3 months, do a 30% water change to remove accumulated minerals and waste. Use a turkey baster or small siphon to remove water from the bottom without disturbing the substrate.

How to care for
your terrarium

Each terrarium is a little different. Select your type below for specific guidance, or scroll through for general principles.

Closed Terrariums
Open Terrariums
Geometric / Air Plants
Aquatic
01
Light: Bright & Indirect

Place your closed terrarium in a spot with bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight — it magnifies through the glass and can overheat the interior. A north or east-facing windowsill works perfectly.

02
Watering: Rarely & Mindfully

A healthy closed terrarium recycles its own water. You should see gentle condensation on the glass walls each morning. If the glass is always completely dry or permanently fogged, a small adjustment may be needed.

03
Ventilation Check

Once a month, open the lid for 1–2 hours to let fresh air in. This prevents anaerobic bacteria from building up and keeps the plant community healthy. Watch for any unusual smells.

04
Pruning & Cleaning

Remove any yellowing or dead leaves promptly using long tweezers. Keep the inside of the glass clear of algae by wiping with a damp cloth during your monthly ventilation session.

💡 Pro Tip

A perfectly balanced closed terrarium can thrive for years — even decades — without watering. The key is getting the initial moisture level right when we build it. Every Enclosed Earth terrarium is tuned before it ships to you.

01
Light: Bright, Even Direct

Open terrariums (usually succulents and cacti) love direct sun. A south-facing window is ideal. Aim for at least 4–6 hours of direct or bright indirect light per day.

02
Water: Soak & Dry Method

Water thoroughly until it drains, then let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. In Bengaluru's climate, this is typically every 10–14 days in summer and 3–4 weeks in winter.

03
Drainage Check

Make sure water can flow freely through the substrate. We include a drainage layer in all our open terrariums. If water pools on the surface, aerate the top layer gently with a skewer.

04
Fertilise Sparingly

Feed with a diluted succulent fertiliser once in spring and once in summer. Never fertilise during the monsoon season when plants naturally slow their growth.

💡 Pro Tip

The most common mistake with open terrariums is over-watering. If in doubt, wait another week. Succulents are far more resilient to drought than to rot.

01
Air Circulation is Everything

Air plants (Tillandsia) in geometric terrariums need good airflow. Don't seal them in a small space. An open geometric frame placed near a window with some air movement is ideal.

02
Mist 2–3 Times Weekly

Mist your air plants generously — soak all the leaves — then allow them to fully dry within 4 hours. Shake out any water pooled at the base to prevent rot.

03
Monthly Soak

Once a month, submerge air plants in a bowl of room-temperature water for 20–30 minutes. Shake off excess water and place them upside-down to dry for an hour before returning them.

04
Cleaning the Glass Frame

Wipe glass panels with a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals — especially near the plants. Polish metal frames with a damp cloth and dry immediately to prevent water marks.
